Getting To Grips With Grace

(This parody of the beautiful hymn by John Newton shows, in a few simple words, the foolishness of the false “gospel” of Arminianism – of man’s supposed “free will” to supposedly “choose” Christ whenever he feels like it.  It shows that such a “gospel” is a “gospel” of salvation by one’s own efforts, for it claims that man is not totally depraved, his will is still intact, and ultimately this means that one is “due” salvation as a debt, rather than given it by God as a free gift to His elect.)

THE TRUE GOSPEL OF GRACE THE FALSE “GOSPEL” OF FREE WILL

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, Arminian “grace!” how strange the sound,
That saved a wretch like me! Salvation hinged on me.
I once was lost, but now am found; I once was lost then turned around,
Was blind, but now I see. Was blind then chose to see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, What “grace” is it that calls for choice,
And grace my fears relieved; Made from some good within?
How precious did that grace appear   That part that wills to heed God’s voice,
The hour I first believed! Proved stronger than my sin.

Through many dangers, toils and snares, Through many ardent gospel pleas,
I have already come. I sat with heart of stone.
’Twas grace that brought me safe thus far, But then some hidden good in me,
And grace will lead me home. Propelled me toward my home.

The Lord has promised good to me,   The offer grasped, good for me!
His Word my hope secures.   My hope my will secures.
He will my shield and portion be I’ve placed my trust on choosing well
As long as life endures. As long as th’ appeal endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, When I have done all I can do,
And mortal life shall cease, And gained my soul’s release,
I shall possess within the veil I’ll step right up for what I’m due,
A life of joy and peace. A well earned rest and peace.

When I’ve been there a thousand years, When I’ve been there a thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun, Because of what I’ve done,
I’ve no less days to sing God’s praise I’ve no less days to sing my praise,
Than when I first begun. Than when I first begun.
