Ritual Killings in South Africa

Everyone who lives in Africa knows it goes on all the time amongst the various black tribes: witchcraft-related ritual torture and killings.  And South Africa is no exception.  We have reported on this before.[1] It is estimated that between 70 and 100 ritual killings occur in South Africa each year.  But this figure is almost certainly far too low.  According to Anthony Minnaar, a professor of criminal justice studies at the University of South Africa, “Because it is often done in secret and the bodies disposed of down a mineshaft or similar, the incidence is much higher than reported.”[2]

People are horrified, and rightly so, by the gruesome methods of execution employed by Muslim fanatics in the Middle East and elsewhere.  And yet the ritual killings which occur all over Africa are even more gruesome, as their victims are alive when various body parts are removed! – and yet this is hardly ever reported.

It is believed, by the practitioners of witchcraft in Africa, that in order to strengthen the quality of the muthi (“medicine”, i.e. magic potions) they make, human body parts are needed.  And it is believed by these demon-possessed individuals that the victim must be alive when his or her body parts are cut off.  They also believe that he must cry, as this supposedly increases the power of the muthi.

In 2006, one black man narrowly escaped death when he was hitchhiking on a secluded route.[3] It is common for ritual killers to target such hitchhikers.  When he got into the car, pepper spray was fired at him and he was dragged into some bushes.  There, an old woman started “throwing the bones”, and “sniffing” which parts of his body to cut off first.  One of the men shouted, “He’s not crying, let’s cut off his tongue at once.”  And another man started slicing his hand.  They started to pull at his tongue with a pair of pliers.

The man managed to fight his attackers off, and run for his life.  Many, however, are not able to escape and are killed in this gruesome fashion every year.  Here are some recent cases:[4]

In August 2004, a ten-year-old boy was found dead, with one of his hands, his genitals and an ear cut off.

In October 2005, a man and his girlfriend were attacked near a village outside Thohoyandou.  The man was killed, and his tongue and genitals were cut off.  The woman was still alive, but her lips were chopped off.

In November 2005, a young man was killed, and his genitals were cut off, in a village near Polokwane.

In May 2006 an old man was found with his heart cut out, near Musina.
