CRIME, CRIME, CRIME: THE WORD THAT DEFINES SOUTH AFRICA TODAY
Violent crime is so epidemic in SA that it is impossible to fully describe what living with it is like, to those who are not citizens here. It affects every single person in this country, directly or indirectly. It is the topic of almost every conversation, the headline of almost every daily newspaper every single day. SA today is the most violent country in the world outside of a war zone. Well over 25 000 people are being murdered every single year. It leads the world in murders, rapes, child rapes, tortures, car hijackings, and all other forms of violent crime. The question is, Why? The blame must be laid squarely at the door of the ruling African National Congress (ANC). This terrorist organisation that now misrules SA waged a bloody revolution against the State for so many years that it turned entire generations of young black men into cold-blooded, ruthless, desperate killers. These same men are now without work (in a country with a 40% unemployment rate), filled with hatred for the white population, and without any fear of the law. For the death penalty has been abolished, citizens are being disarmed by restrictive private gun ownership legislation, the commando system that protected the rural areas has been dismantled, the police are poorly trained and consist for the most part today of ANC devotees, ex-terrorists and criminals themselves, and the courts are so over-worked that they simply cannot cope with the sheer volume of cases before them. In short, the ANC government is losing the war against crime, yet it shows neither the ability nor the desire to do anything about it.
Just a few examples will suffice at this time, all from the month of July:
In July, Frans and Daleen Pieters and their two children were attacked and tortured in their home on their smallholding at Swartruggens, by three men. The criminals kicked open the front door and attacked Daleen with a knife, cutting her leg to the bone in two places. Then they tied her husband and children up. They then melted a plastic bag and dripped the melting plastic on her ten-year-old son Gideon. They battered his nose and eye, and also hit their three-year-old daughter Anuscka. One of the men then pushed the barrel of a pistol into Daleen’s mouth, and blindfolded and gagged all of them. They scalded Frans Pieters with boiling water, and cut open his forehead. Afterwards they strangled him to death with a shoelace.
The three attackers ransacked the home, stealing a TV and DVD player, and then left.
The sheer brutality of many of these attacks defies belief. The motive is not merely to steal – it is to torture and terrorise whites.
The Kruger National Park is world-famous, one of the world’s greatest game parks. In July, while tourists slept peacefully in their caravans at the Crocodile Bridge rest camp inside the Kruger Park, the staff were being assaulted by five armed robbers just metres away.
The robbers climbed over a gate at the rest camp and overpowered the guard at about 2.00 AM. Then they used a crowbar to hack a hole through the wall of the walk-in safe. They could not break into the arms safe, so they went to the house of the service manager, broke in, overpowered him, took him to the safe and forced him to unlock it. They also plundered his house, stealing his pistol and his car, in which they fled after overpowering another guard.
This time, no tourists were attacked. But this is not always the case.
Things are so bad that British tourists have been warned about South Africa by Norwich Union insurance company. Research undertaken by the company says SA is first on the list of countries where British tourists are warned about serious crime. Travellers to SA are the most likely to suffer violent robberies or lose their belongings in transit.
About 1000 claims were received by the company last year from clients who experienced difficulties in SA. These were mostly about attacks on the street in which tourists’ jewellery and money were stolen. A spokeswoman for the insurance company said, “We don’t discourage people from choosing South Africa as a tourist destination. We remind them to be careful.” The company warns clients not to wear jewellery when visiting SA and to use safes in hotels to store valuable items and excess money. “Tourists should always try to gain local advice about how they can protect themselves and be vigilant about their personal safety,” she said.
Things are so bad, in fact, that New Zealand’s foreign ministry stepped up warnings about travel to SA in early September, saying crime is a serious issue, with muggings and carjackings prevalent. The ministry’s travel advisory said on its website that there is “some risk” in travelling to SA, and advised tourists to be vigilant at all times, especially at bus stations and airports, where organised gangs operate. It specifically mentioned the cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, warned of the danger of carjackings on roads leading to Kruger National Park, and said visitors should only go to Table Mountain in Cape Town in groups so as to minimise the risk of attack.
Four delegates attending an international conference in Durban were beaten, assaulted and mugged just hours after arriving in the city in late July. Three of the four were foreigners – from Poland, Mexico, and Belgium. The nationality of the fourth was not determined at the time of the press report. The three foreign delegates were attacked within metres of one another. The Polish delegate was mugged in the afternoon; an hour later the Mexican and Belgian delegates were attacked by a group of at least 10 youths who attempted to mug them. One of them suffered a broken nose, ruptured eye vessels and severe bruising. The other lost her glasses and a necklace, and suffered a bump to the head.
The fourth delegate was mugged in the morning as he was waiting for his room to be prepared by hotel staff.
Murders on freeways are occurring with increasing frequency. In July, Robert Pitzer was shot in the chest on the south coast freeway in KwaZulu-Natal province. Cuts on his arm showed that he fought for his life, but in vain. His wife and the couple’s neighbours found his body next to the road at dawn the next day.
It is suspected that the murderers placed rocks on the road, as has happened in the area before. A rear wheel came off Pitzer’s car, forcing him to stop. When he went for help, he was murdered.
Car hijackings have become so common in some places, that some people have been victims more than once. But even in a country that has grown accustomed to such things, people are shocked when they learn that Naeem Patel, of Durban, has been hijacked seven times.
In four of the seven hijackings, guns were shoved in his face. “Each time my money and belongings were taken,” he said, and he had been injured several times. The most recent occurrence, in July, occurred when he was a passenger in a taxi. He, the taxi driver, and other passengers were taken on a two-hour terror drive by two men who got into the minibus taxi, and then produced guns. The victims were driven to a vacant plot in KwaMashu, one of Durban’s black townships, where the hijackers stripped the tracking device and sound system from the taxi. They then drove to another area and the victims were thrown out of the car.
Blacks in South Africa – and many liberal whites, Indians and Coloureds too – harp on and on about the supposed “horrors of apartheid” and white rule. But never, ever was this country in the grip of such a crime epidemic when conservative whites governed. It was then an efficient, safe, First World country. When the ANC came to power in 1994, the world rejoiced. Twelve years on, however, and this is the reality South Africans of all races have to live with, every single day. The United States, the United Kingdom, the United Nations, the Vatican, Russia, the European Union, and just about everyone else, wanted the ANC to rule this country. And now they do. But for ordinary South Africans, who have to live in this criminal State, life has become a daily uncertainty.
THE WAR AGAINST WHITE FARMERS CONTINUES
The ANC/Communist government’s war against South Africa’s white farmers continues. The government has now abandoned the “willing seller, willing buyer” approach, according to Land Affairs Minister, Lulu Xingwana. She said that her department will now only negotiate with farmers for six months to agree on a selling price; and if the negotiations fail, their land will be expropriated by the government. She said, “At least now we have… expropriation. Therefore, we will no longer waste time negotiating with people who are not committed to transformation” (The Witness, August 15, 2006).
According to the executive director of AgriSA, Hans van der Merwe, the Land Affairs Minister’s statements “are creating unnecessary confusion and tension”, and seem to be in direct conflict with the land reform laws, which set out procedures for expropriation. “We have never asked to be paid more than a reasonable commercial price for our properties,” he said.
The manager of property rights at the Transvaal Agricultural Union SA, Chris Jordaan, said in the wake of the minister’s remarks: “How are we going to keep farmers on their land and produce food for the country with these continuous remarks against them?”
He said that South Africa has about 43000 commercial farmers, and that 12000 of them will no longer be farming after the “land reform” processes are finalised. “That is a massive amount of farming ability that’s being lost. The government’s whole approach will have great consequences for commercial farming,” he said.
There is no question whatsoever that the ANC government is deliberately forcing white farmers off their land, so that it can be given to blacks. Only a few years ago, there were tens of thousands more farmers than the 43000 today. And soon their will be at least 12000 less than there are now. These white farmers are feeding a nation of close to 50 million people – possibly more. But this doesn’t matter to the Communist government now misruling SA. It wants them off their land. And expropriation is one way to get them off. The farmer is being forced to agree to the government’s price for his land, which is usually going to be below market value. And if he does not agree to it, then his land will be taken from him.
The ANC tells the world that the “Zimbabwe scenario” will not be repeated here, where thousands of white farmers were forcefully and illegally removed from their land. But in truth the very same thing is happening here; the only difference being that in SA it is legalised theft.
The SA Communist Party welcomed the Land Affairs Minister’s decision.
And expropriation is only one way that farmers are being forced off their land. The other way is by torture and murder. South Africa’s white farmers are today the most endangered people on earth outside of a war context. Something like 1800 of them have been murdered since the ANC came to power. Many of these murders are not accompanied by the theft of anything – the criminals simply come to the farms with the sole purpose of murdering the farmers and their families. And these murders are gruesome, with the victims being horribly tortured beforehand in many cases.
One of the most recent farm murders occurred just a day before this was written, when a 71-year-old white farmer was murdered in an attack on his farm in KwaZulu-Natal. His body was found tied to a tree in a field, with an open wound to his head. His 62-year-old wife survived with severe injuries to her body.
The vast majority of these shocking crimes are committed against white farmers by blacks. But in KwaZulu-Natal province, Coloured farmers are living through their own nightmare as well (Coloureds in SA are a distinct nation, the descendants of blacks and whites). In the Mangete area, descendants of Scottish hunter John Dunn, who was granted land in the area in the 1850s by the Zulu king, are again living in fear after another wave of violence was directed against them by Zulus in the area, who want the Dunns off their farms. The land invasions by blacks began there after 1993. And although in 2004 the Durban High Court ruled that the squatters be evicted, thousands of illegal squatters still live on the Dunns’ land.
On June 30 this year, 78-year-old Hilda Dunn was attacked in her house by two men. She escaped by spraying them with insecticide. This was the third attack on this family in the last year. On July 9, a group broke into the house on Joan Dunn’s farm, and hit her son on the head with a hammer. This was the third attack on this family since 2004. Two days later, Keith Dunn was stabbed in his house.
Between September 2000 and July 2001, there were 51 reported cases of rape, housebreaking, robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property owned by Mangete landowners. One case involved the rape of a nine-year-old girl (Weekend Witness, July 15, 2006).
Other cases of intimidation included the near-fatal shooting of Mangethe Landowners’ Association chairwoman Pat Dunn’s husband in April 2003, the burning of her effigy, arson on huge tracts of sugar-cane, and numerous death threats against landowners.
Pat Dunn said, “People are living in fear but this is their home, their roots. We are not going anywhere.” And according to violence monitor Mary De Haas, “Most cases appear to be closed undetected, and complaints of shoddy police work abound. The identities of some of these criminals are known, as is a venue at which they meet. When Joan Dunn made a report to the police about the recent incident at her home one of the [police] members asked why she did not simply sell and move.”
This is not surprising. The once-mighty, efficient SA Police Service is now riddled with criminals, cronyism, and corruption. As the vast majority of policemen in the Mangete area are black, they have no sympathy for the Dunns. Nor, of course, for SA’s white farmers, the “thin khaki line” keeping the wolf from the door across the land.
It also recently came to light that black schoolchildren are possibly being used to spy on white farmers! All across SA, for many decades, white farmers have established schools on their farms for the children of black farm labourers. Recently a principal of a school near Carolina had given a school “assignment” to her students, in which they were told to gather important information about the farms in their vicinity. It was a handwritten questionnaire, instructing the Grade 9 students to make a sketch plan of farms in the area. Information about the layout of the farms had to be provided, and the students had to indicate where the main homestead, barns, stables, and other permanent structures were located. There were questions about how far the farm is from the nearest town, how many people live on the farm, how often the farmer sees his neighbours, where the farm workers come from, and what type of collaboration there is between the farmer and his neighbours.
One farmer found students drawing a plan of his farm. When he asked to see it, the students refused to show him, and told him that the teacher had said the farmers should not be allowed to see it.
The school principal claimed that the questionnaire formed part of the geology curriculum. Farmers believe, however, that these could be used for planning farm attacks.
This is the pressure under which South Africa’s white farmers, among the most successful in the world, are having to go about their work every single day. The government’s duty is to protect its citizens. This the ANC is utterly failing to do. If this relentless war against SA’s farmers continues, the country will collapse. It is as simple as that.
AND IN ZIMBABWE, THE REMAINING WHITE FARMERS RECEIVE EVICTION NOTICES
“The Zimbabwe government is reneging on a pledge to invite exiled white farmers back to work the land and is moving to evict the few hundred who survived President Robert Mugabe’s six-year ethnic purge. Scores of eviction notices were either delivered or were on their way to productive white farmers last week. The farmers will have 90 days to leave their homes and abandon their businesses. In an indication that the government is launching a final push against the farmers, Didymus Mutasa, the lands and security minister, told Western diplomats this week that he did not care if Zimbabwe’s land remained unproductive ‘as long as we [blacks] own it’. Four months ago Mr Mugabe asked white farmers to stay. It was a spectacular admission that his 20 million-acre land grab had failed and that the expulsion of more than 4000 white farmers had wrecked the economy. Mr Mugabe even invited some who had fled their farms to return home and apply for 99-year leases for their properties, which were all nationalised last year. About 900 existing and former white farmers applied for leases, half of them through the Commercial Farmers’ Union, but none has been processed.” (From the Rhodesia Christian Group Occasional Newsletter, August 2006. Source: The Daily Telegraph, 26 June 2006).
It is over. The curtain has fallen on the white farming community of Zimbabwe, some of the best farmers in the world, who fed Zimbabwe’s millions. Who will feed them now?
The Zimbabwe government decided in early September to actually use soldiers to raid farms and force farmers, and villagers, to surrender their grain to the Grain Marketing Board, in a desperate attempt to boost dwindling strategic grain reserves. This follows a government-sponsored project under which the army was deployed to actually take over farming operations on irrigation schemes. It failed dismally, producing less than a quarter of the projected output.
The former maize board chief executive, Renson Gasela, said: “This is evil, it’s diabolic and a measure of utmost desperation by the government. It is proof that there is no maize…. Why force people to surrender food they are keeping for their own consumption and for their livestock? It is totally unacceptable” (The Witness, September 11, 2006).
And Zimbabwe is the model for SA’s own anti-white government, and for Namibia as well. The western world has a lot to answer for, having delivered the prosperous white-governed southern African countries into the hands of black Marxists. Will these same countries now come to the rescue of the starving millions whose lives have been shattered by these Communist madmen?
We wait to see, but we’re not holding our breath.
SA’S HEALTH SYSTEM IS IN CHRONIC FAILURE
South Africa once had the reputation of having one of the best health systems in the world, of truly First World standards. No longer. Under ANC misrule, the health system is in a state of collapse. SA’s public hospitals “are over-burdened, under-staffed and poorly managed” (The Witness, August 30, 2006).
Private hospitals are, by and large, well-run and offer excellent care. But they are out of the reach of over 80% of South Africans, who cannot afford to join medical aid systems; and so they are forced to attend the government-run hospitals and clinics. Communists the world over love to impose State control over everything; and in every case, what they control fails, because it is simply not the State’s duty to be involved in such things. But they never learn. And now SA’s State hospitals are in disarray.
There is a huge countrywide shortage of skilled nurses, doctors and specialists. As a result of extremely poor wages, huge workloads, shocking working conditions – not to mention the constant State interference – those who can are emigrating, taking their skills where they are more appreciated overseas. Approximately one-third of health posts countrywide are vacant. Some hospitals are functioning (if functioning is what it could be termed) with less than half the staff needed.
Making things infinitely worse is the massive increase in Aids patients at all hospitals. Aids is devastating the black communities of SA, and hospitals cannot cope. To make matters worse, many nurses and other medical staff are HIV-positive themselves, thanks to rampant sexual immorality in the black communities. In some hospitals, up to three-quarters (and even more) of the beds are filled with HIV-positive patients.
Over-crowding in many hospitals is so chronic that many patients are discharged prematurely to make room for others.
Outbreaks of klebsiella, the hospital-acquired infection, have killed 110 babies at a Durban hospital over the past three years.
Nurses are so poorly paid at government hospitals that many of them resort to “moonlighting” in private hospitals to supplement their incomes, resulting in high rates of absenteeism at government hospitals. And while many nurses are dedicated and compassionate, many others couldn’t care less, arriving at work late, leaving early, and neglecting their patients.
Black workers are so politicised in SA, thanks to the revolution waged by the ANC prior to 1994, that they regularly go on strike, and even treat their patients in the most shocking ways imaginable. A few years ago, at one hospital in the Eastern Cape, protesting nurses actually climbed onto beds and urinated on patients! This is Nelson Mandela’s much-vaunted “New South Africa”! This is the nightmare reality.
AND SPEAKING OF “SAINT” NELSON…
South Africa’s former president, Nelson Mandela, is so revered by blacks in SA, and by almost everyone the world over, that the myth has replaced the reality. Nelson Mandela, the Communist terrorist, has been replaced by “Saint” Nelson, the “father” of the “New South Africa”, a man who can do no wrong, an angelic being far above the rest of us mortals.
When he celebrated his 88th birthday in July, all the schools for deaf children in the country made birthday cards for him, gushing with fawning praise and adulation for this undeserving media-created “superstar.” And the poem about him, written on one giant birthday card, spoke of “your sweet, angelic smile.” Oh, please. How disgusting to use children as pawns in this way! A man who was rightly convicted and sentenced to life in prison, who was fully in favour of the brutal armed revolution against the State in which multiplied thousands died, is now virtually worshipped as a veritable demi-god!
What a job the media has done, serving the interests of the Communist overlords, of telling a lie so often that people believe it, of declaring that black is white until it is accepted as fact.
THE ZULU KING’S PROPOSED NAME CHANGE OF KWAZULU-NATAL PROVINCE
King Goodwill Zwelithini of the Zulus recently proposed that the name of the province of KwaZulu-Natal be changed to KwaZulu – and ignited a huge and heated controversy.
Historically, Zululand fell under the control of the former British Colonial province of Natal; but when white rule in SA ended, the province’s name was changed to KwaZulu-Natal. This was an acceptable compromise. But in July this year, the Zulu king launched a campaign to collect millions of signatures in support of his desire to change the name. In doing so, he said, “The president [Thabo Mbeki] inspires us to take a stand to reclaim dignity for Africanness. He inspired us to rectify mistakes committed by colonialists, who ravaged and plundered the African continent, and revive our heritage. For us in KwaZulu the African Renaissance will have to start by priding ourselves on Zuluness…
“The Zulu nation has a right to name the place they live in as KwaZulu as much as the Indians have the right to do the same in India, Germans in Germany and French in France. Only the conquered have to have the name rammed down their throats” (The Witness, July 10, 2006).
Now hold on just a minute! Yes, there were Colonialists who certainly did ravage and plunder. But taken as a whole, Colonialism was an immense blessing to Africa, and any progress that Africa made was the result of what Colonialism brought to this continent. Furthermore, we would respectfully point out to His Majesty that the founder of the Zulu nation, Shaka, ravaged and plundered the tribes of the area now known as KwaZulu-Natal, himself! Shaka forged the Zulu nation by warfare and destruction. So let’s not get carried away here: those Colonialists who ravaged and plundered were no worse than Shaka Zulu himself!
And also: we know that His Majesty does not need to be reminded that KwaZulu-Natal is a province consisting not just of Zulus, but of millions of English South Africans, and of Indian South Africans, as well. So by all means, Your Majesty, go ahead and call on your subjects to pride themselves on their Zuluness. You are their king, and that is your right. But you are not king of the English, or of the Indians, in this province. For those of us who live here, and who are not Zulu, what would you have us do? Must we leave this province? Are you saying that there is no home for anyone who is not a Zulu, here?
An Indian woman wrote the following letter to The Witness, one of KwaZulu-Natal’s dailies. It is excellent: “King Goodwill Zwelithini is disregarding the fact that we are a diverse province. Not only Zulus live in KwaZulu-Natal. Or is this now apartheid in reverse? This change would cause division among the people of KwaZulu-Natal. It would break the spirit of ubuntu, as the name change is telling other races and other tribal groups that this province is only for Zulu people. My forefathers also worked hard, through blood, sweat and tears to help build this province and the economy. And we are still doing so today. Our recent generations were born here in KwaZulu-Natal, this is also our home. We should not wonder why our people are emigrating. It is autocratic moves such as this that do not make us feel as one nation. I love KwaZulu-Natal; it is my home. But this name change will make a negative statement. I can now understand why some people emigrate with such bitterness towards our country. Changing the name to KwaZulu tells me that I, a non-Zulu person, do not belong here” (The Witness, July 12, 2006).
It is very true that the Germans call their country Germany, the French call theirs France, etc. But here’s the difference: KwaZulu-Natal is not a separate country, it’s a province within the country of South Africa. And not only that, but when, say, a black man from Africa emigrates to Germany or France or Britain and eventually takes out citizenship, he becomes German or French or British! Well then, Your Majesty must accept that, if you were to get your way, every single non-Zulu in this province must become a Zulu! Are you willing to accept that? Are your (present) Zulu subjects willing to accept that? – to accept English Zulus, Afrikaner Zulus, Indian Zulus?
King Goodwill went on: “It will be in our interest to remove Natal in the name of our province – the remnant of Vasco da Gama.” He said that he cannot abide that the province’s name is still associated with da Gama.
Vasco da Gama was the Portuguese explorer who named this part of the continent “Natal”, because he first sighted it on “Christmas” day (hence “Natal”, i.e. “Nativity”). We of course oppose the Roman Catholic religion of da Gama; but that is not the point here. What is the point? This:
The historical reality is that this land was named Natal in the late 15th century – which was three centuries before the Zulus were anything more than just one of a number of tribes in the region. Shaka Zulu died in the early nineteenth century, and he it was who forged the Zulu nation. Thus the name “Natal” is older than “KwaZulu” or “Zululand.” Furthermore, it was a name that was fully accepted, not only by the British, the Boers, and the Indians, but even by large numbers of Zulus themselves, as they fled the devastation caused by Shaka and the Zulu kings that followed him!
There can be no doubt that this attempt by King Goodwill is simply being done because of his own dreams of conquest and empire.
And it is highly significant that the Zulu king is being opposed by other kings in the province, as well! These other kings, who claim equal status with the Zulu king, said that the Zulus do not have exclusive naming rights to KwaZulu-Natal.
For example, King Mzondeni Hlongwane of the AmaNgwane challenged the Zulu king’s status and the land over which he reigns, as well as the age of his tribe. King Hlongwane’s advisor said that the Zulu king is not the only king in the province, and has no authority to change the name. “There are other kings in KZN. We are in a democratic state and if we are talking about democracy, there should be no tribe that dominates above others,” he said (Weekend Witness, July 8, 2006).
He said that there are several tribes who have the same claim as King Goodwill of the Zulus. And he also said that his tribe is 100 years older than the Zulus, and fought against the English more than 50 years before the Zulus did. Furthermore, he also pointed out that the province was named by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama over three centuries before the formation of the Zulu nation! “Zwelithini reigns in Zululand, not in Natal,” he said.
According to Mandla Mthethwa, a Zulu historian: “History tells us that the Zulus were one of the smallest tribes. I believe the Zulus are still not the dominant tribe in numbers today in KZN…. No tribe ever acquired fully-fledged nation status in the true sense, since they were still evolving into strong units when Shaka began to attack them… The Zulu tribe began to expand its territory to occupy other tribes’ territories when Shaka Zulu became the Zulu king. Shaka became king of the Zulus by force…. Shaka never stopped attacking neighbouring tribes…. Other kings and their subjects submitted themselves and their territories to Shaka’s rule in fear and to save their lives…. Conquered tribes began to adopt Zulu culture and norms…and began to think of themselves as Zulus because their own king could not defend them…
“King Zwelithini is not the only king in KZN…. sorry, Your Majesty, your name change is feudal and divisive and is driving us backwards” (The Witness, July 20, 2006).
The African National Congress said that accelerating development and service delivery in the province is a greater priority than changing its name. This is good as far as it goes. But given the fact that the ANC government has changed the names of a great many towns, streets, buildings, airports, rivers and dams across the country, thereby obliterating the history of the country, we should not put too much faith in their word in this regard. South Africa’s history is being rewritten according to the ANC. We should not give an inch in this ideological war.
ANOTHER USEFUL WEBSITE
In our Snippets from South Africa: June 2006, we listed some useful websites, and we wrote the following: “Just so that our readers know there are other websites out there, maintained by various organisations, groups, etc., which are seeking to warn the world about the dangers faced by white South Africans today, here is a short list. Please note: we certainly do not endorse everything about these groups and organisations, and most do not even claim to be Christian. We simply mention them here for documentation purposes, because they contain very useful factual information on what is happening in South Africa. They provide a factual counter-balance to the propaganda and lies emanating from the liberal press in SA and internationally.”
Well, in July a new website was launched in South Africa: Crime Expo South Africa (now operated from the United States). Its purpose is to show the world just how bad crime is in SA, providing international tourists with a preview of the death and violence in this country. It wants to force the government to address the shocking crime rate.
When it was launched, it received overwhelming international and local support. The following is from the July 2006 article on the website:
“Official South African tourism agencies label the country as an ultimate destination for foreign tourists. This is in line with practice around the globe. It is also the norm to ignore negative aspects like reasonable levels of violent crime. In the case of South Africa, tourists get lured to experience the game parks, sunny beaches and friendly hotels. South Africa does not experience ‘acceptable’ levels of violent crimes. Armed robberies, attempted murder and murder became part of the South African daily routine. The country since 2000 registered a shocking annual figure of between 18000 and 25000 murders. Thus to ignore explosive statistics on murder, while luring tourists to visit the country, is immoral. Killers in South Africa do not differentiate between citizens and tourists. They kill to kill…
“If data on this web page embarrasses the leadership of the country, then we achieve more than we had hoped for…. Foreigners have a right to know that South Africa officially is the MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD…. This web page is dedicated to the hundreds of thousands that lost their lives in an unnatural brutal manner and those who are fed up with the ‘SILENT MODE’ on the gruesome situation in South Africa…
“Insulting politicians is not going to do the trick. Protesting outside in the streets is not going to do the trick. Voting for a fancier politician is not going to do the trick. Telling the international tourist what is happening between the airport and hotel is going to do the trick! MARK MY WORDS! Who wants to die in a foreign country?…
This is correct. The only way this useless government will ever take crime seriously and do something about it, is by hitting where it hurts most – in the pockets of the “fat cat” politicians.
Not surprisingly, the government, the tourism sector, and soccer stakeholders all slammed the website as damaging to SA’s role as the 2010 Soccer World Cup host country. To which we say: good! Anything that shows the true nature of the crime rate in this country is a very good thing; and if it makes the government angry, so much the better! It is government’s duty to protect its citizens. Why should millions be spent on attempting to protect visitors in 2010, when the country’s own citizens are living behind bars like criminals, while the criminals roam freely? We sincerely hope that the World Cup does not come to SA.
One letter to Fifa, the soccer governing body, said: “We ask Fifa, as concerned South Africans, to place the utmost pressure on the South African government, to ensure that the crime rate of 54 murders a day is brought under control. The way it is now, hundreds of tourists coming to SA in 2010 will be subjected to the vicious crime that is part of everyday life in SA…. Our Safety and Security Minister recently stated in Parliament that all those who complain about the crime in SA should leave. Well, maybe Fifa and the hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists should do exactly that.”
An open letter to President Mbeki, featured on the website, said: “It is atrocious that while you sit cushioned behind your bodyguards, you do not care what happens to human beings that are slaughtered and maimed daily, black and white alike. However, never has it been the trend that black farmers and their families are slaughtered and burnt for absolutely no reason at all, ever, in the history of this country, least of all in a time of PEACE. Yet this is happening every day to almost exclusively white farmers. I cannot even begin to imagine the outcry should this have been happening to almost exclusively black farmers! And in return for this contribution, you enjoy a high political status, and ridiculous salary, paid for by the taxes of the innocent victims that are slaughtered daily…
“The apparent legacy of ‘independence’ at this point in time, has been to create a state of heaven for all rapists, murderers, robbers, kidnappers, as well as political tyrants/outcasts/criminals from your political buddies in arms, from countries abroad. As if we do not have enough of them right here. And then you even give them free housing and enormous allowances and full asylum status…
“Should a policeman point more than a can of pepper spray at a psychopath with an automatic rifle, he is charged with attempted murder. Same with anybody else. Why don’t you and the entire cabinet go and live in the slums armed with a can of pepper spray each, and travel on the trains and taxis twice a day, every day? No bodyguards with pepper sprays for you either…. How dare you have the audacity to pass laws that are nothing but death sentences, without asking your voters how they feel about it? How dare you?”
The anger is growing daily in SA. Ordinary citizens have had enough.
